Prince George Free Press » Petition on park resorts

A group called Friends of the Campaign for BC Parks has organized a petition to try and stop the province from allowing commercial resort developments in B.C.’s class A provincial parks. “They may range from cabins to like hundred-room hotels with restaurants, shops, marinas,” said Sharon Glynn of Esquimalt, one of the petition organizers. “These are not just places that are going to sit beside a campground – many of these are in the prime locations.” For instance, she pointed out that the province wants to allow a resort to be developed about 20 kilometres up Mt. Robson near a glacier. As well, plans are in the works to build a resort and marina at one of the lakes in Wells Gray Provincial Park.

Petit Creek wildfire near Merritt now under control | iNFOnews | Thompson-Okanagan s News Source

The Petit Creek wildfire burning northwest of Merritt is now under control. The B.C. Wildfire Service reported today, April 23, the 100-hectare grassfire is under control and the cause is unknown. The fire was discovered this past Sunday. The wildfire service said strong winds reaching up to 60 km/hr are expected to sweep the Kamloops Fire Centre, today, April 23, and is urging members of the public and industry personnel to exercise extreme caution when conducting any outdoor burning and consider postponing burning if feasible. Wind can cause grass fires to spread very quickly, the wildfire service said yesterday. Anyone wishing to light a Category 3 open fire must obtain a burn registration number ahead of time by calling 1-888-797-1717. A burn registration number is not required to light a Category 2 open fire.

With wind in the forecast, Kamloops Fire Centre urges caution on open burning

The BC Wildfire Service is urging members of the public to not conduct any open burning until the windy conditions pass as wind can cause grass fires to spread quickly, as has already been seen earlier this spring. As of April 23, there have been 121 wildfires in B,.C., 30 of which remain active. Fifteen of those active blazes are in the Kamloops Fire Centre, which stretches from the Lillooet area in the west to east of Vernon and from the Canada/U.S. border in the south to Wells Gray Provincial Park in the north. It is the responsibility of the individual to ensure that burning is done in a safe manner and is in accordance with regulations. Before lighting any fire, it is advised to monitor the upcoming weather forecast and check with local governments to determine if any local burning restrictions are in place.
