An on-again, off-again debate is back in Grand Traverse County: how to improve east-west traffic. It’s been a contentious issue for years – even decades – but the Road Commission is again turning to the public for input on how to ease traffic congestion.
Over the years it’s been referred to by many names, including the Hammond-Hartman Corridor and “the bypass.” But now “The Boardman River Corridor Study” is focusing on three long-term alternatives to move traffic more smoothly and avoid congestion. OHM Traffic Engineering Consultant Steve Dearing says, “This is a planning study to try to identify whether there’s significant need for additional east-west mobility.

The Directorate of Public Works is clearing the underbrush out of some of the forested areas on post.
The goal is multifaceted, according to Installation Forester and Pest Management Coordinator Greg Hicks. Clearing the underbrush from wooded areas can help control the spread of invasive plant species, lower the risk of large brush fires on test ranges by depriving the fire of fuel or, in some cases, cut down on the number of deer strikes in a certain area. It can also be for aesthetic reasons.
Summer will be swimmingly cool this year at Redstone Arsenal with the reopening of Goss Road pool.
To the dismay of swimmers of all ages, the pool was closed all summer in 2020 due to COVID-19. But with virus cases going down and temperatures going up, the pool will open on May 29, just in time to kick off Memorial Day weekend.
âPeople are very happy weâre going to be open,â Lori Ciranni, sports, fitness and aquatics director, said. âTheyâre looking forward to getting outside and swimming.â
Patrons can bring their own snacks and drinks and enjoy a spot at one of the poolâs metal picnic tables or lounge chairs between splashes.

The Pine Fire burning near Piñon Hills grew to 450 acres and destroyed at least one structure Wednesday night as hundreds of firefighters from multiple agencies worked into the evening to strengthen containment lines, officials said.
More than 200 firefighters were still working on the fire as of Thursday morning. Firefighters are once again battling high temperatures, low relative humidity, gusty winds with extremely dry vegetation, authorities said. Based on yesterday s observed fire activity and weather, the potential for significant fire growth still exists.
Temperatures in the area are expected to peak in the high 80s with 10 to 15 mph winds in the afternoon and gusts of up to 20 mph, according to the National Weather Service.
