Brexit and bees : Senator raises unusual situation

April 7, 2021 1:03 pm The withdrawal of the UK from the EU has caused untold difficulties, but Fianna Fáil Senator for Roscommon/Galway Eugene Murphy raised an “unusual situation” regarding “Brexit and bees” in the Seanad recently. Senator Murphy said that he was contacted recently by the Federation of Irish Beekeepers Associations “in relation to an English man who is trying to import 15 million bees from Italy to England”. “He is trying to bring them through Northern Ireland because of Brexit,” the senator explained. “The correspondence stated that if the bees go into Britain, the authorities there will burn them. Therefore, it is now being stated clearly that he will try to put the bees up for sale in Northern Ireland.

€523,091 allocated to retrofit 19 Longford homes Reporter:   ); €523,091 has been allocated to Longford County Council to retrofit 19 homes and make them more energy efficient.  Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, Darragh O’Brien TD announced an initial allocation of €35m for the retrofitting of 1,293 homes while the balance of funding (€10m) will then be allocated to the local authorities who demonstrate an ability to complete additional work and spend their full allocation during 2021. Roscommon County Council received €345,200 towards retrofitting 13 units, Westmeath County Council received €498,398 for the retrofitting of 18 units and Cavan County Council received €518,556 towards 19 units. The Programme for Government commits to retrofitting 500,000 homes to a B2/Cost Optimal Equivalent BER standard by 2030. It is expected that approximately 36,500 of those with be local authority owned homes.

Senator Murphy said that while all details had yet to be finalised, he was hopeful that the location for a Covid vaccination centre in Roscommon Town would soon be announced. “Further details have yet to be ironed out but I am confident that the location for a Covid vaccination centre in Roscommon Town will soon be announced. This is most welcome news as there had been concerned expressed in the national press that rural areas would be left without vaccination centres. I had a number of calls about this issue and I confident that a vaccination centre for the county town will soon be announced. It is my understanding that vulnerable people or older people who cannot travel to the vaccination centre will be contacted by their GP for alternative
