Dun Laoghaire Harbour’s strategic location as an EU port in the middle of the Irish Sea may have been overlooked by commercial fishing fleets for years but since Brexit, it appears Belgian fishermen have been quick to see the advantage of the Dublin Bay port.
Not only did two Belgian trawlers take shelter from today’s forecasted south-easterly gale but both 38-metre boats also offloaded catch at the harbour’s number two-berth on the Carlisle Pier.
Best seaside town in the UK: Bamburgh, Northumberland
The blustery wind that comes off the North Sea hardly makes Bamburgh a top spot for seaside sunbathing. But readers think its dramatic scenery, with an unspoiled golden-sand beach that sits below Bamburgh castle, makes up for it. It also means that the town is rarely crowded. Bamburgh scored four out of five for peace and quiet – something that might be greatly valued this year as domestic breaks have surged in popularity. It was also awarded five stars for value for money, another attractive quality for holidaymakers this year.
