LOUIS The University of Missouri - St. Louis has been awarded a $5.1 million grant that will go toward improving literacy at 40 St. Louis-area schools. According to a release, the U.S. Department of Education awarded 11 state education organizations grants for its Comprehensive Literacy State Development program. In total, the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education received $18 million to be distributed over a period of five years. Transit memorial, pen pals, White House doctor: News from around our 50 states From USA TODAY Network and wire reports, USA TODAY Alabama Birmingham: The Birmingham VA Health Care System is expanding its ability to vaccinate veterans against COVID-19, provided it can get enough doses. A partnership with the United Way of Central Alabama will allow the agency to provide as many as 1,000 shots a day beginning this week to veterans who are at least 65 years old, the VA said. That’s up from the current daily total of 300 people. The change comes because the VA’s vaccine clinic is moving into a United Way building in downtown Birmingham. Chief executive Stacy Vasquez said the system will schedule as many veterans as it can for shots, but obtaining additional vaccine is key. “Right now, I have enough vaccine to take care of 5,000 people next week. The room is sectioned off into check-in points with nursing staff and a waiting area for newly-vaccinated staff members.      Mariposa County Unified School District Custodial Foreman Bill Peterson, 78, becomes first district staff member to receive COVID-19 vaccine. Bill Peterson, 78, is greeted by a nurse as he walks in. He holds onto his health information packet as he walks up to the cafeteria stage, behind the curtain. Nurses are stationed there with vaccines. Peterson sits down, joking with them before he rolls up his sleeve. 

Douglas County commissioners approve five-year road construction plan, including three new roundabouts

Funding for the road construction projects come from several sources. 11:41 am, Jan. 20, 2021 × Tim Erickson Roundabouts, shoulder widening and reconstruction of roads are just a few of the projects approved by the Douglas County commissioners at the Tuesday, Jan. 19, board meeting. The commissioners approved the five-year construction plan presented by Tim Erickson, Douglas County Public Works director. Erickson told commissioners that the plan is a tool used to manage funding for road and bridge projects. The plan, he said, is fluid and can change, especially in years 2023, 2024 and 2025. For the most part, the projects planned for 2021 and 2022 are set. Funding for the road construction projects come from several sources including the gas tax which is state aid funding, the half-cent local option sales tax, local levy (property taxes), as well as federal funds and grants, among others.
