Helping lost, injured hikers; fighting wildfires: DEC Forest Rangers to the rescue

State Forest Rangers have been busy lately rescuing lost and injured hikers, along with fighting wild fires and doing prescribed burns.
The following incidents occurred between April 5-10. All information below was supplied by the state Department of Environmental Conservation.
Town of Pleasant Valley Dutchess County
Wilderness Rescue: “On April 5 at 11:30 a.m., DEC’s Central Dispatch received a call from Dutchess County 911 about a 64-year-old woman from Pleasant Valley with a lower leg injury near the Mercury Trail at the Taconic Hereford Multiply Use Area. Three Forest Rangers responded and helped to package and transport the subject out of the woods to Pleasant Valley EMS. The subject was then taken to a local hospital for treatment.”

SANTA FE, N.M. A bosque fire alongside the Rio Chama in Abiquiu has led authorities to evacuate homes in the area Saturday evening as firefighter work to suppress the blaze.
Wendy Mason, with the state Forestry Division, said the Rio Fire is around 5 acres and burning on both sides of the river near U.S. 84.
She said multiple homes are threatened and the Rio Arriba Sheriff’s Office is evacuating residents. Mason said numerous local and state resources are working to contain the fire.
“Smoke is visible for several miles around the area. The cause is under investigation,” Mason said.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) and state legislative leaders struck a deal on Thursday to put half of the state’s $1 billion wildfire funding towards firefighting and a variety of preventative measures. The measures include vegetation management, construction of fire-resistant structures and new technology and equipment.
CA isn t waiting until peak wildfire season to protect our communities.
