According to police, bystanders were unfortunately unable to save Gelant.
Police responded and immediately launched a search party consisting of members attached to the Dysselsdorp police, Southern Cape Police Diving Unit, Disaster Management, and Oudtshoorn Law Enforcement.
Spies said the search started at 11:00 and continued into the night until 19:45 on Sunday evening. The parents of Gelant were on the scene when the police arrived and identified their daughter s body, said Spies.
An inquest docket was opened for further investigation.
According to Spies, an autopsy will be conducted on the little girl during the course of the week.

CAPE TOWN - The body of a nine-year-old girl has been found in a canal in Dysselsdorp, outside Oudtshoorn in the southern Cape.
Rudicia Gelant was playing with other children when she fell into the water.
Another girl tried to rescue her, but also slipped and fell into the water. Bystanders managed to rescue the second girl, but Gelant could not be saved.

Emergency services are at the scene and motorists are being warned of delays following the closures at two points

An overturned tanker carrying 36,000 litres of petrol has shut a busy road on Teesside while the same stretch has now been affected by a second smash.
Emergency services are still dealing with the first incident which happened near Huntsman Drive, near Port Clarence.
The A178 Seaton Carew Road is closed in both directions as a result .
Delays built up on the A178 after the vehicle overturned at around 7.20am.
