A GoFundMe has been launched to help with the burial of Bella Callaway who was killed at a Maylene home Monday after her 3-year-old brother found an unsecured gun and it discharged. Bella was taken to Shelby Baptist Medical Center where she was later pronounced dead. The shooting happened on Goldilocks Lane in the Maylene community, according to Shelby County sheriff’s Maj. Clay Hammac. The shooting happened about 10:30 a.m. in the Longmeadow community at the home of Helena police officer. The officer was at work at the time, and it was not his duty weapon involved. Bella was not the officer’s child.

In 2016, city and county leaders from Shelby County came together to form a partnership like nothing that had been done before. Their goal was to take a proactive approach to the increasing trend of substance abuse and addiction among students and young adults and equip families to respond to their loved ones facing these challenges. That partnership, called Compact 2020, uses career law enforcement officers, who are specialized investigators, in an attempt to gather information to identify students and young adults who are at risk of substance abuse and addiction or are already involved.
