The many leaves of bushes and shrubs surround a deer that stands still, quietly, on the side of a partially wooded and a long-winded road. A heavy stream is flowing in a deep valley as a jeep prudently traverses the water without slipping on to the muddy path. My hands are kneading clay as I prepare the therapeutically tactile material to be transformed into something sculptural.
Many such memories that brim with an interaction between nature, earthen matter and myself, flood my mind every time I see a sculpture by contemporary ceramic artist Shazia Zuberi.

KARACHI: Reflecting his personality, his past experiences and his fond memories, Imran Ahmad’s initial fascination with time and space finally combines the varied character traits in his work, according to the artist, as quoted by the Koel Gallery, where his latest solo exhibition titled ‘2+2=5’ is running until December 16.
“Dots, lines and tones vigorously scratch the metal to construct images from the conscious and the subconscious, and the pleasure of mark-making, with oozing strength and energy, leaves me with abstraction narrating long stories with only a stroke. At the same time, a small word illustrated with thousands of lines.”

KARACHI: Plants and leaves are, arguably, the best manifestation of nature. Apart from the aesthetic and therapeutic charm that they suffuse the world with, their greenness and/or the very process of shrivelling symbolise the life trajectory of living beings.
An exhibition titled Foliage, which was under way at the Art Chowk Gallery, takes the metaphor forward and applies it to things that may not, ostensibly, fall under the category of breathing creatures.
Jamal Ashiqain is the curator of the show. He in his curatorial note explains, “A fragile nascent shoot to a dead maple leaf displaying vivid colours, artists have used foliage in countless abstractions, and forms in a number of contexts, and here with this exhibition we are exploring the use of this very simple element in the modern visual vocabulary by artists today.”
