Calaveras, CA–Memorial Day weekend is considered the unofficial start of Summer and with warmer temperatures come more boating activity in some of the many recreation areas in the Motherlode. The Calaveras County Sheriff’s office Marine Safety division has some reminders to keep everyone safe and responsible when recreating on the water. In 2020 there was a total of 35 boating accidents on the lakes in Calaveras County, of the 35, 13 involved serious bodily injuries. Sadly 3 of those accidents involved drownings that were determined to be avoidable. The following are some tips that were shared by Marine Safety to help better enjoy water recreation.
Updated Fire in Douglas Flat area
Update at 12 p.m.: CAL Fire dispatch reports that the steep and rocky terrain is making it difficult for firefighters to get a hose line around the blaze burning in the Douglas Flat area of Calaveras County. The acreage remains between 4 and 5 acres with no structures threatened. The flames broke out in the brush along Camp Nine Road above some water tanks near Ponderosa Way, off Parrotts Ferry Road.
Camp Nine Road at Parrotts Ferry Road and the Camp Nine Bypass remain closed.

The first-ever Foothill Wine Festival Competition was held in Folsom on May 15. It was open to all wines bearing labels from Amador, Calaveras, El Dorado, Mariposa, Nevada, Placer, and Tuolumne counties.
House fire in Rancho Calaveras 5-28-21
Rancho Calaveras, CA Fire crews are still on the scene of a structure fire in Calaveras County this morning.
The blaze ignited in a home on the 6000 block of Cane Lane near Brooks Road, south of Highway 26 in the Rancho Calaveras area Friday evening. Calaveras Consolidated Fire reported heavy fire conditions on the second floor at the front of the home with the flames ignited in the attic. Luckily, those inside the house were able to escape the blaze unharmed. They report significant damage inside the home but the flames did not spread to any other areas of the home or to nearby vegetation.
