AMMAN UNICEF’s Makani Programme provides remote services for the most vulnerable children in Jordan through the provision of remote learning support services through the Makani Remote Services component.
The Makani (“My Space” in Arabic) programme provides an integrated package of services including educational learning support services, community-based child protection, early childhood development and skill-building training for children, young people, families and community members.
It’ll be a good long while before anyone knows the full extent of the learning loss suffered by 700,000ish New York City public-school kids who’ve been attending class remotely, or the 300,000ish who’ve been learning at least partially in-person, since COVID descended. But educated guesses say hundreds of thousands of students have made minimal gains, stalled or backslid. Repairing the academic damage done is a gargantuan challenge, as is helping youngsters who’ve been missing the social and emotional and physical health benefits of putting on a backpack every day.

Like many New York City charter schools, Brooklyn’s Ascend network started off the year fully remote. But just a few months in, it became clear: Remote learning wasn’t working for certain students.
Attendance dipped, and teachers struggled to reach students at the network’s K-12 schools. Many of the children come from some of the poorest neighborhoods in Central Brooklyn, and some live in vulnerable housing situations. They needed a safe, supervised place for effective virtual schooling.
