Fair season is fast approaching, and Carroll County Iowa State University (ISU) Extension and Outreach is already beginning to release results and schedules for presenters. On Thursday, July 15, three teams will showcase their communication presentations at the Carroll County Fair before taking their exhibits to the Iowa State Fair in August. Four local 4-H’ers will also be displaying their table setting skills with original designs and themes. Table setting is not featured at the Iowa State Fair, but the selected entries will be heading to the regional table setting competition in Cass County on Aug. 7. The initial judging for these events was held Tuesday, June 22 at the United Methodist Church in Carroll. A complete list of the competitors and their entries is included below. The Carroll County Fair is scheduled for July 13 through July 18.

The Carroll County Board of Supervisors will hold their final public hearing on the Fiscal Year (FY) 2022 budget at their regularly scheduled meeting on Monday. The board is moving forward with a total property tax levy of $4.33 per $1,000 of taxable valuation for the urban rate and $7.63 for the rural rate. The hearing opens at 9:30 a.m. Monday, and the supervisors are expected to vote on approving the proposed budget once it has closed. A discussion on the county’s HIPAA policies also return to the agenda. Other items of business include an update from County Engineer, Zac Andersen on secondary roads, discussions on the Rolling Hills Mental Health Region Community Services, workers compensation providers and township trustee and clerk compensation and an assurance of nondiscrimination for Carroll County Iowa State University (ISU) Extension and Outreach. Tomorrow (Friday) is the deadline to register for an online course on the basics of beekeeping through Carroll County Iowa State University (ISU) Extension and Outreach. The two-night class will be hosted via Zoom and led by ISU Agriculture Specialist, Zack Koopman. Beekeeping 101 was designed to introduce the fundamentals of managing a honeybee colony. The first session will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, March 15, and Koopman will review what kinds of equipment a new beekeeper would need and important decisions regarding starting a hive. The second session, slated for Monday, March 22, will teach participants about managing a hive and how to properly harvest honey.
