Alison Hernandez, Police and Crime Commissioner for Devon, Cornwall and the ISles of Scilly Cornwall Council has said that the delays in counting which led to the result of the Police and Crime Commissioner election not being announced until late last night was due to the need to be accurate. Counting of votes in the Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) elections started at 9.30am yesterday (Monday) at the Royal Cornwall Showground in Wadebridge. But eight hours later candidates and officials at the Exeter count centre – where the Devon and Cornwall results were to be compiled and announced – were left waiting for the outcome from Cornwall.
Alison Hernandez has been elected as police and crime commissioner for Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly for a second term of office. Commissioner Alison Hernandez won with a majority of 65.2% over second place Gareth Derrick (Labour) after a second round of voting. Following an election already postponed by the pandemic, the result was then delayed by a count that took more than 13 hours, following a ‘discrepancy in the results’ from Cornwall holding up the process. Ballots begun to be counted at 9.30am on Monday, but it was not until almost 11pm that a result was called. Commissioner Hernandez was eventually sworn into her role in Exeter late on Monday by Karime Hassan, CEO of Exeter City Council.

Alison Hernandez has retained her role as the Police and Crime Commissioner for Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly for the next three years.
The Conservative candidate was re-elected to the role with an increased majority on her 2016 win after counting on Monday.
Incumbent Hernandez was being challenged by Labour’s Gareth Derrick, the Liberal Democrats Brian Blake, and Stuart Jackson of the Green Party, and she came agonisingly close of a first round victory, scoring 49.97 per cent of the votes, just short of the 50 per cent required.
