In a welcome move, Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has roped in beggars and street dwellers to join their garbage cleaning drive. Tagged as the ‘Kharata Paltan’, these financially disadvantaged people will now be a part of PMC’s Swachata team. Civic officials have allocated Bhavani Peth to the newly formed team. With this initiative, the civic body aims to assist the beggars to earn a living and keep the city clean.

A small band of homeless persons and beggars, who have been named the ‘Kharata Phaltan’, have now started cleaning the streets and areas around city monuments, via which they are also earning money for the hours of work put in. Organised by well-known ‘doctor for beggars’ Dr Abhijit Sonawane, the initiative has now been put before the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) for formalisation as well, with a request to assign places to the team to work dedicatedly. And, civic officials have also welcomed the concept.
