In view of the Covid-19 pandemic, the government has banned the participation of devotees and will impose prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the CrPC between the stretch of the Jagannath Temple and the Narendra tank during the period. “The Section 144 will remain in force from Saturday (3pm) till June 4 (9pm). We have formed six Covid enforcement squads, consisting of police personnel and the staff of the Puri municipality, to enforce the prohibitory orders. We request the citizens of Puri to cooperate with us and remain indoors,” Puri SP Kanwar Vishal Singh said.

The rituals for Chandan Yatra and construction of chariots for this year’s Rath Yatra will begin on the auspicious day of Akshaya Trutiya on Saturday with minimum number of servitors, who would conduct the rituals. “There will be no participation of devotees,” Puri district collector Samarth Verma said.

Puri district authorities say tokens will be issued according to the availability of vaccine doses BHUBANESWAR: The Puri district administration has introduced a token system for beneficiaries of 45 years and above to regulate the crowd at the vaccination centres. “We will issue tokens as per the availability of vaccine doses. Those who do not have the tokens, will be asked to leave. This will help prevent unnecessary gathering at the vaccination centres. Police personnel have been deployed at the vaccination centres to streamline the system and evict non-token holders,” Puri district collector Samarth Verma said. As seen in other places, the vaccination centres in Puri have been witnessing a mad rush of beneficiaries, all of 45 years and above, making it difficult for the authorities to enforce social distancing during the alarming second wave of the Covid-19.
