New Delhi: The Supreme Court on May 31 said that it “is time to define the limits of sedition,” noting that sections of the Indian Penal Code that deal with sedition require interpretation, particularly in the context of media freedom.
LiveLaw has reported that the apex court’s observation came as it stayed coercive action against two Telugu-language news channels against whom Andhra Pradesh police had alleged sedition over the airing of a statement by an MP who had rebelled against the ruling party in the state.
When it Comes to the Rule of Law in India, We Need to Pay Attention to Variants of Concern
The cases of Stan Swamy, K.R. Krishnam Raju and the Narada Scam accused are terrible aberrations that the judiciary must not tolerate or else personal liberty will become an alien concept.

Three recent developments have been quite disturbing. In the context of these developments, we need to ask ourselves: Are we witnessing the rule of law doing a vanishing trick or are we witnessing variants of concern in the rule of law? Something is definitely amiss and itâs time we identify it and take remedial steps before it is too late.
Rebel YSR Congress MP K Raghurama Krishnam Raju, arrested on sedition charges last week, was granted bail by the Supreme Court today. The court observed that he may have been ill-treated in police custody.
