This weekend, plant more flowers on Connecticut Ave then learn more about their environmental benefits | Forest Hills Connection |

Connecticut Avenue is more beautiful – and more bee-friendly these days. Van Ness Main Street and volunteers have spent the past six weekends cleaning up trash, sprucing up the I’m Eddie Cano/Rosemary Bistro Cafe streatery, placing plant-filled pots and planting hundreds of flowers in tree boxes. There is one more flower planting event on Saturday, April 24th, from 1 to 4 p.m. Volunteers can sign up here to help Master Gardener Kathy Sykes plant native and other pollinator-friendly flowers in front of Italian Pizza Kitchen. Or donate here to help pay for the flowers and other Van Ness Main Street efforts.

Tour Connecticut Ave street gardens with Master Gardener Kathy Sykes on April 25 and 26 | Forest Hills Connection |

A Connecticut Avenue flower gardens in August 2020, cultivated by Master Gardener Kathy Sykes and her husband Steve Vetzner. Sykes has a wealth of knowledge about the plants, and she will be giving 75-minute walking tours of the Connecticut Avenue street gardens on Sunday, April 25th and Monday, April 26th. The proceeds from each will benefit Van Ness Main Street. The Sunday afternoon tour is for kids and their grownups. The Monday evening tour is for ages 16 and up. On both walks, you’ll learn the names and unique features of some of our native and perennial plants. You will also learn about “keystone plants” that provide tremendous benefits to our environment. You can easily translate this knowledge to your home garden or balcony plantings.
