AMHERST Full-time, in-person instruction is anticipated at public schools in Amherst and Pelham this fall, while face coverings are likely to be required for students and staff when they are in the buildings, according to a letter Superintendent Michael Morris sent to families this week.
In the message sent to the public school community Tuesday, Morris gave a preliminary update in advance of the Aug. 30 first day of school indicating that measures aimed at controlling the spread of COVID-19 and variants, used when buildings reopened in the spring, remain in place.

Amherst Regional school district reports more than 200 students ages 12-15 got COVID-19 shot

AMHERST – More than 200 students ages 12-15 at Amherst Regional school system have already received a COVID-19 vaccination shot, Superintendent Michael Morris reported during Tuesday’s school board meeting.
Morris said that during a clinic on the campus last week, “176 Students were vaccinated on Friday, which is fabulous.”
“We are seeing a really good turnout,” Morris added.
Asked by a member of the Amherst regional school committee if he thought it possible that all age-eligible pupils would be vaccinated by the next academic year that begins in August, he said: “I am an eternal optimistic: I hope 100%. . . our efforts are to remove barriers” so that that those wanting to get the shot can gain access.

AMHERST An Amherst Regional High School English teacher who pioneered a class on gay and lesbian literature in the late 1990s is one of 11 semifinalists to be Massachusetts Teacher of the Year for 2022.
Sara Barber-Just, the English Department’s chairwoman, was recently notified about the honor, and Superintendent Michael Morris informed the Amherst-Pelham Regional School Committee about the recognition.
Morris called the decision “fantastic and well earned” and described Barber-Just as “a fabulous person,” noting she has been profiled in local and national publications for teaching the LGBTQ+ literature class and putting together the course curriculum.
