SAN ANGELO The Standard-Times sent a questionnaire to all candidates running for San Angelo City Council. The positions for Mayor and Single Member Districts 2, 4 and 6 are up for election. Voters will decide who will represent them on May 1, 2021.
The 10 candidates in this year s election represent a diverse mix from San Angelo s community, with six women and four men seeking office. Some have been involved in city politics for years. Others, like 19-year-old Cie Rangel, are political newcomers.
On May 1, San Angelo will choose between three mayoral candidates. Incumbent Brenda Gunter, the city s first elected female mayor, will face two challengers: Silvara Lawson and Dietrick Tillis.
Salvation Army of Abilene continues to make sure the homeless population has access to the COVID-19 vaccine

ABILENE, Texas The Salvation Army of Abilene is continuing its efforts to educate and be a resource to the homeless population who may need to get the COVID-19 vaccine.
Organizations such as the Salvation Army of Abilene are continuing to make sure they put in safety measures to continue to make sure staff members and shelter residents continue to be safe - including installing Plexiglas, enforcing the wearing of masks, and maintaining a three-foot rule between beds.

SAN ANGELO, TX The weather is getting cold at night and many wonder what happens to the homeless out on the streets when it is cold. The Salvation Army closed its full-time shelter almost two years ago because of a lack of funding. Absent a large endowment, it s not likely to reopen soon.
The Concho Valley Homeless Planning Coalition in conjunction with the Salvation Army of San Angelo initiated the “Out of the Cold” program last winter, and it provides shelter to those experiencing homelessness when the nighttime temperature is expected to reach 35 degrees by 5 a.m. the next morning.
SAN ANGELO Freezing temperatures in the Concho Valley have once again activated a program to help San Angelo s homeless population escape potentially deadly weather.
The Concho Valley Homeless Planning Coalition has initiated the “Out of the Cold” program, which provides shelter to those experiencing homelessness when the nighttime temperature is expected to reach 35 degrees by 5 a.m., according to a city news release.
“On cold days like today, where temperatures drop well below 35 degrees we typically house between 18-25 people each night,” said Major Darvin Carpenter with The Salvation Army. “More than 20 individuals currently experiencing homelessness slept in a warm, safe place last night thanks to the Out of the Cold program. Several of these folks came to The Salvation Army during the day yesterday seeking shelter and a meal, and our social services director actually walked across to an area where several of our homeless clients typically spend their days and
