SAN ANGELO Freezing temperatures in the Concho Valley have once again activated a program to help San Angelo s homeless population escape potentially deadly weather.
The Concho Valley Homeless Planning Coalition has initiated the “Out of the Cold” program, which provides shelter to those experiencing homelessness when the nighttime temperature is expected to reach 35 degrees by 5 a.m., according to a city news release.
“On cold days like today, where temperatures drop well below 35 degrees we typically house between 18-25 people each night,” said Major Darvin Carpenter with The Salvation Army. “More than 20 individuals currently experiencing homelessness slept in a warm, safe place last night thanks to the Out of the Cold program. Several of these folks came to The Salvation Army during the day yesterday seeking shelter and a meal, and our social services director actually walked across to an area where several of our homeless clients typically spend their days and
