STL240: Nature is Dave Fisher's design partner

Question 2: From Ron: I’ve done a bunch of woodworking, mostly with power tools and home center lumber.  How would I explore greenwoodworking?   How does one acquire green wood?  (yeah, I know, go in a forest & cut down a tree, but seriously, if you don’t live out in the country with property, how can one explore working with green wood?) From Gail: Where do I find green wood in Brooklyn, NY? I am specifically looking for enough raw material to make a Jennie Alexander design shaving horse. Question 3: From Leonard: I have a question on green wood storage. My workshop is not climate controlled. So in winter its really cold – 0°c and in summer it’s +30°c. I have taken Dave’s advice on wrapping in black plastic bags but in the warm weather the wood still dries out. Am I better to keep it wrapped and store it outside all year round under a shelter?? Also would a thick wax be suitable to treat the end grain on a log to prevent drying while still a log?

STL239: Are expensive sanders worth it? - FineWoodworking

STL239: Are expensive sanders worth it? Anissa, Barry, and Ben discuss milling box stock, the cure for chasing perfection, if high-end sanders really perform better, and what a listener can make with a cherry burl. Apr 23, 2021 From Kyle: I live in a very small apartment and getting any kind of big power tool (even a drill press!) is out of the question. So I’m really going down the handtools route. I’m also focusing on fairly small projects (besides my moravian workbench that can be taken apart). I’ve been getting most of my wood as scraps from a commercial shop.

STL238: Tim Coleman's shop-sawn veneer secrets–revealed!

STL238: Tim Coleman’s shop-sawn veneer secrets–revealed! Fine, they weren t secrets, but Tim sits down with Mike and Ben and the conversation goes deep into veneering processes. Apr 09, 2021 From Patrick: I’m working on a large (30″ wide x 8′ high x 12″ deep) arts and crafts cabinet for a client and had a question about general best practice for using shop sawn veneers: when only one side shows – for example, the back of this cabinet, what’s the best way to balance the solid (1/8″ or less) show veneers when the back won’t be seen? It seems like a waste to use shop sawn veneers on the back… With a shop sawn veneer, does the veneer on the opposite side of the plywood core (non-show side) need to be the same thickness, or would a brown backer veneer be enough? It’s all Quartersawn White Oak with solid face frames, shelves, and doors, and rift oak plywood sides, top and bottom.  Thank you!

STL236: Does a jointer save you money? - FineWoodworking

STL236: Does a jointer save you money? Mike, Barry, and Ben debate if every piece needs the strength of dovetails, cast iron vs. aluminum on bandsaws, whether a jointer saves you money, and the lifespan of tool tests. Mar 12, 2021 From Brian: Reading the article from Nov/Dec 2015 titled ‘The Enfield Cupboard, Updated’ by Matt Kenny generated a question about joint choices during case construction. Matt dovetails the subtop, but uses standard dados for the rest of the shelves. Since the dovetails are hidden, I’m assuming he did that for strength. Why that joint up top, but not a sliding dovetail for the bottom? Maybe this is a broader question about why you choose different joints for case construction.
