Goodwick and Fishguard fundraiser reaches £11,000 mark

A fundraising appeal for Fishguard and Goodwick has raised more than £11,000 in the first week A FUNDRAISING appeal for Fishguard and Goodwick, supported by Golden Globe nominee, actor Matthew Rhys, has soared to more than £11,000 in the first week. The campaign aims to raise £30,000 via the Crowdfunder platform, which will be shared among three projects. The first is to help buy a replacement for the much-loved but recently-retired helter-skelter slide outside the Ocean Lab on the Parrog seafront. The second is to provide funds for Theatr Gwaun s Show up Saturday programme of exciting creative workshops aimed at teenagers and young adults.

25 badass women shaping climate action in 2021

Close Authorship Given the devastating economic toll the COVID-19 pandemic has had on women and girls, the imperative to mark International Women’s Day carries more weight than usual this year.  The idea of a day celebrating the accomplishments of the female gender in the U.S. reaches back to 1909. Throughout the subsequent decade, the concept was embraced by countries including Austria, Denmark, Germany, Russia and Switzerland, but it wasn’t until 1975 that the first International Women’s Day was celebrated and adopted by the United Nations. As I began identifying leaders to include on this third annual list, I was inspired by the introduction to All We Can Save, an essay and poem collection co-edited by marine biologist Ayana Elizabeth Johnson (who you can find on this year’s list) and Katharine Wilkinson (who we recognized on the first Badass Women list in 2019).

Partnership aims to restore estuaries, Everglades | News, Sports, Jobs - SANIBEL-CAPTIVA - Island Reporter, Islander and Current

Partnership aims to restore estuaries, Everglades By SANIBEL-CAPTIVA CONSERVATION FOUNDATION - | Mar 2, 2021 SCCF On Feb. 17, as the cool morning winds blew across San Carlos Bay, a flotilla of boats departed the Punta Rassa boat ramp and headed north towards the mouth of the Caloosahatchee. It was the start of a new partnership between the east and west coasts of Florida aimed at restoring freshwater flows to the Caloosahatchee and the Everglades. City of Miami District 2 Commissioner Ken Russell and his chief of staff, Abigael Mahony, joined Sanibel Vice Mayor Holly Smith, Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation Chief Executive Officer Ryan Orgera, SCCF Marine Lab Director Eric Milbrandt and SCCF Environmental Policy Director James Evans, along with Captains for Clean Water and the Everglades Trust, for a boat tour of the Caloosahatchee Estuary and Pine Island Sound.

Actor Matthew Rhys supports Fishguard crowd-funder for Parrog, theatre and signage

A CROWD-funding campaign to kickstart the regeneration of Fishguard and Goodwick has been endorsed by award winning actor Matthew Rhys. Rhys, who starred as Dylan Thomas in the Edge of Love and won an Emmy for The Americans, has a close connection with the twin towns. Some of my earliest memories were forged there, he said. Playing on the beach in Goodwick and running on its breakwater, to crab fishing in Lower Town, Fishguard remains a magical place for me. Especially now, given these trying times for tourism, this campaign comes at a critical time. The need for not only drawing people to this beautiful corner of north Pembrokeshire, but also keeping local people here is more important than ever. When all things are normal again (or near enough), one of my greatest hopes is to see the fruit of this labour and see Fishguard and Goodwick thrive again. I wish this project well.
