DEEPLY INTERESTING FINDINGS FROM BLUE HOLES This year, Mote scientists undertook some of their deepest and most challenging missions yet into the Gulf of Mexico’s blue holes underwater caves, springs and sinkholes being explored for their unique biology, chemistry and structure. The world took notice of these pioneering efforts during July and August 2020, when  Mote’s blue hole research appeared in 242 news stories estimated to reach more than 850 million viewers or readers. Notably, one of Mote s upcoming blue hole expeditions was covered by The New York Times and VICE News and was mentioned on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. One blue-hole expedition was the subject of an entire episode of the national program Changing Seas produced by South Florida PBS.

Researchers studying why sperm whale became stranded in bay     MOBILE, AL (WALA) The Dauphin Island Sea Lab releasing findings from a study of sperm whale that became stranded late last year in Mobile Bay. It was the story that captivated the Gulf Coast and one of our most talked about animal stories of 2020. It was also a first for the Dauphin Island Sea Lab. “It’s actually the first live large whale that has ever stranded in Alabama,” said Dr. Jenny Bloodgood, Dauphin Island Sea Lab Veterinarian. Dr. Bloodgood was among the Sea Lab team that responded to the call for help November 19th.

Three Florida State University graduate students have been awarded fellowships from the American Association of University Women (AAUW). Natali Ramirez-Bullon and Alexandra Hooks, two doctoral students in the Department of Biological Science, earned the American Fellowship. Sohaila Isaqzai, a doctoral student in the College of Education’s International and Multicultural Education graduate program, was awarded the International Fellowship. All three earned the awards for their academic work and innovative community projects that empower women and girls.

CROW Clinic: Birds, turtles feeling the impact of red tide in SWFL this year Published: February 22, 2021 6:05 PM EST Updated: February 22, 2021 9:37 PM EST While it looks like there are fewer spots of red tide dotting our coast, the effects of it can last much longer by taking a toll on wildlife. The CROW Clinic on Sanibel Island has admitted nearly 100 royal terns (Thalasseus maximus) as patients so far this year. Of those birds, 66 have signs of red tide poisoning, showing how algal blooms can disrupt the food web. So, it’s a welcome sight when the CROW Clinic releases an animal back into the wild.
