Akbar after she came forward with sexual harassment allegations against him. The case, argued for two years, had seen support for Ramani from women and men across professions, but particularly journalists. Ramani’s fellow journalists had not only accompanied her to court hearings, testified in the case and stood by her, they have also been vocal on Twitter.

Landmark victory for India’s MeToo movement as Delhi court strikes down defamation claim Rituparna Chatterjee © Provided by The Independent In a landmark ruling on a case that has defined India’s MeToo movement, a Delhi court on Wednesday struck down the criminal defamation lawsuit brought by a former government minister against a woman journalist who accused him of sexual harassment. Acquitting Priya Ramani in the case initiated by former foreign minister MJ Akbar, additional chief metropolitan magistrate Ravindra Kumar Pandey observed that “a woman has the right to put her grievance, even after decades”. The court also noted the social stigma attached to such allegations, and said that society must understand the impact of sexual abuse and harassment on its victims. Justice Pandey observed that “even a man of social status can be a sexual harasser” and that the “right of reputation can’t be protected at the cost of right to dignity”.

Journalist Priya Ramani acquitted in MJ Akbar criminal defamation case

A Delhi court on Wednesday acquitted journalist Priya Ramani in connection with the criminal defamation case filed by former Union Minister MJ Akbar against her. In his defamation suit, MJ Akbar had claimed that Priya Ramani caused damage to his "stellar reputation" by accusing him of sexual harassment in an article written in 2017 and a tweet posted in 2018.
