Stop Rampant Food Waste and Feed the Hungry

Goal: Create a federal program to stop food waste and feed underprivileged Canadians. More than 5 million Canadians are insecure about their food or rely on food banks to feed their families. Despite this, more than $30 billion dollars of edible food is destroyed by grocery stores each year. Most of this food is fit for human consumption and should be donated to food banks or given to struggling and underprivileged citizens. Besides the humanitarian implications, this massive amount of wasted food has an immensely negative impact on the environment. Sign this petition to urge Canada to follow Frances’s example, and create a federal law forbidding grocery stores from throwing away food that is still edible and fit for human consumption.

Stop Exporting Millions of Animals to Their Deaths

Goal: Stop the horrifying export and murder of farm animals. Unbeknownst to the general public, Canada is the third-largest exporter of livestock in the world. These animals suffer from inexplicable conditions and neglect while they are shipped around the globe to die in other countries. This disturbing agricultural practice has to stop. Each year, more than 22 million farm animals are sent from Canada to over 70 countries. While farm animals shipped within Canada are protected, however poorly, by transportation laws, animals shipped internationally are exempt from these regulations. This means livestock can be in transit for any length of time, to anywhere in the world, as long as their basic needs are met. This latter point is the responsibility of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), but Canadian courts have declared that the CFIA has no legal duty to enforce this.

Stop State-Sanctioned Animal Cruelty

Goal: Stop supporting the abuse, neglect, and inhumane torture of Canadian farm animals. Millions of farm animals die or are pointlessly euthanized, live in wire cages, wallow in their own feces, or are fattened until they can no longer walk. They suffer horrific treatment at the hands of farmers, truckers, auctioneers, feedlot operators, and meat processors, and this horrifying abuse is sanctioned by the Canadian government. Farm animals are intentionally excluded from every provincial legislation governing animal protection, and no federal laws exist regulating their humane treatment. This is unacceptable and must change. The NFACC (National Farm Animal Care Council) Codes of Practice offer guidelines for handling and caring for farm animals, but adherence is voluntary. These guidelines are developed for the industries they serve and are not made in the best interests of the animals. Smashing an animal’s head against the floor as a method of euthanasia is horrific animal abuse,

Stop Imprisoning Pregnant Sows in Horrific Conditions

Goal: Outlaw cruel gestation stalls on pig farms. Pregnant sows raised for breeding are confined in gestation stalls that are so small the pigs cannot turn around. The only exercise these animals get is walking a few steps forward or backward in the 2ft by 7ft prisons. Over a million breeding sows are raised in Canada each year, and the majority of them suffer in these horrific conditions. Pigs are naturally gregarious and inquisitive animals, and forcing them into these cages is torture. They suffer distress from aggressive neighbors, cold and damp environments, unable to avoid insects, and they cannot express their natural instincts such as rooting, exploring, wallowing, or nest building. Most pigs in these factories suffer from abnormal and repetitive behavior such as bar biting, lameness, chronic stress, reduced muscle strength, and weak bones. These pigs suffer for human profit. The gestation stalls allow farmers to control feed intake, reduce disease transmission, and reduce
