Johnny Bench Sold Off Some Memorabilia, and a Friend Bought It and Gave It Back to Him

Baseball Hall of Famer  JOHNNY BENCH auctioned off some memorabilia to raise college tuition for his two sons.  The items included Johnny’s last homerun bat, his last Reds jersey, a 1968 rookie of the year award, and his Gold Glove Awards.     But a friend of Johnny’s named Alan Horwitz bought it all, then donated it back to him.  And he paid ridiculously high prices so the stuff wouldn’t be bought up by collectors.  He spent between $1 million and $2 million.     Horwitz said, quote, “Seeing how hard he worked to be recognized the way he was after all these years . . . only he deserves them.”
