Oklahoma City s Painted Sky Opera tells transgender story with state premiere of As One

Oklahoman Rather than a museum piece, Rob Glaubitz considers opera a contemporary art form that can connect deeply with life as we know it.  I think opera is still very relevant today and has something to say to modern audiences. That s one of my reasons and my passions for doing modern opera, said Glaubitz, artistic director of Painted Sky Opera. I try to find something that is relevant to today s society in every work that we do. Directed by Glaubitz with musical direction by Jan McDaniel, As One marks the first collaboration between the two OKC arts organizations as well as the first performance with an in-person audience in the theater at Oklahoma Contemporary s new downtown complex.

Fire In Little Africa Debuts Album Tracks In Live OKC Performance

Fire In Little Africa Oklahoma hip-hop collective Fire In Little Africa, a project of the Woody Guthrie Center, Bob Dylan Center and 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre Centennial Commission, debuted tracks from their upcoming album in a Saturday concert at Oklahoma Contemporary in Oklahoma City. The album, scheduled for a May 28 release on Motown Records, was inspired by the history of Tulsa s Greenwood District Black Wall Street before, during and after the massacre. The only reason why we re here today is because 100 years ago, Black people were killed, executive producer Stevie Dr. View Johnson told the crowd at the performance, which was also livestreamed. I want to say it again the real reason why we re here is because Black people were murdered and massacred 100 years ago. If Greenwood was still flourishing, no one would care about 100 years.

Pandemic chaos leads to opportunity fresh from the oven for local baker

Oklahoman When the COVID-19 pandemic scuttled Michelle Bui’s best laid plans for 2020 she mourned like everyone else, but then she started baking like no one’s ever seen and now her outlook for 2021 is on the rise.  On Saturday, Bui and her sister Anna will be back out at the OSU-OKC Scissortail Farmers Market, this time with more inventory after their baked goods were wiped out before noon during the season’s first event.  The Hokkaido milk bread from Bui’s Breads has quickly grown an audience since she began offering it for sale last summer. That inspired her to add sourdough, Hawaiian rolls and pretzels to the menu, which she currently creates in the family kitchen.
