Ogdensburg meeting cut short by mayor; city manager expects police force reductions in wake of sales tax change

Monday, August 2, 2021 - 7:11 pm BY JIMMY LAWTON North Country This Week OGDENSBURG Following a brief presentation on the city s finances and a discussion regarding shared services, Ogdensburg s City Council meeting was cut short by the mayor. Mayor Jeffrey M. Skelly stopped the meeting before any action was taken after he requested retired firefighter Gerald Mack to leave the meeting and he refused. The mayor said Mack was posturing at him and making faces. After the mayor called for order Mack told the mayor to shut up. The mayor also drew ire from Councilor Nichole Kennedy who was speaking at the time the mayor called on Mack to leave. She accused the mayor of interrupting her and was dismissive of his calls to bring order to the meeting.

St Lawrence County legislators shoot down resolution in support of Ogdensburg home rule bill

CANTON — Following an hour-long discussion, St. Lawrence County legislators on Monday night voted against a resolution in support of Ogdensburg’s home rule legislation that would allow the city to collect up to an additional 1% of sales tax revenue. Legislator David W. Forsythe, R-Lisbon, proposed the resolution at the full county Board of Legislators meeting on July 12, but it was tabled until the board’s next Finance Committee meeting, which was Monday night. Mr. Forsythe successfully motioned to remove his resolution from the table Monday night, yet the resolution had no further luck in the Finance Committee as legislators ultimately voted 9-4 against it after back-and-fourth discussion.

Ogdensburg officials calling on state to clean up vacant Psych Center buildings

Sunday, July 11, 2021 - 5:05 pm BY JIMMY LAWTON North Country This Week OGDENSBURG  Some Ogdensburg officials are calling on the state to clean up the long vacant buildings at the St. Lawrence Psychiatric Center. Ogdensburg City Council is set to act on a resolution calling on New York State to take action on “the blight and public safety threat caused by their unmaintained property at the St. Lawrence Psychiatric Center.” The city says that the state has taken no action to stabilize buildings on the SLPC property that have been vacant since the early 1980s. “The State of New York continues to neglect these buildings to the pointthat they have become a public health hazard and a blight on the City of Ogdensburg,” the resolution says. “No funding has been appropriated tosave these historical treasures, despite the fact that the State set up and operates a historic preservation program and office.”
