Estimates put the number of people detained at over a million. As well as reports of forced labour and other abuses, there are reports of Uighur women experiencing forced insertion of IUDs and forced sterilisations and abortions. These reports appear to be substantiated by official Chinese statistics which show birth rates in Uighur regions declining by more than 60 per cent between 2015 to 2018 (the most recent year for which statistics are available).
