High winds – up to 131 mph on Mount Washington – cause Concord fire, power outages across the region Trees and wires down on the road due to high winds. City of Concord Concord fire officials suspect a tree that brought down wires on East Sugarball Road Monday night caused a power surge that started a fire in a nearby home. No one was injured. Courtesy By staff and wire reports Published: 3/2/2021 3:38:26 PM The Concord Fire Department responded to a structure fire caused by high winds Monday night, according to Fire Chief Sean Brown. The fire started in the basement of a single-story home on East Sugarball Road and was likely caused by a power surge from downed trees on nearby wires. When Fire Department units arrived, their access was blocked by a pine tree that fell across the road, tearing down power lines. Firefighters “performed an extended hose stretch” to reach and attack the fire, according to a statement from Brown.

Letter: Don t choose the path of ignorance

I write this as a white woman, born and raised in New Hampshire and a graduate of our great state’s public education system. After living all over the U.S. for 18 years, I returned to New Hampshire in 2018 to raise my family in a place that has always.

My Turn: Concord hands out unfair breaks to developers

My Turn: Concord hands out unfair breaks to developers Published: 3/1/2021 6:30:06 AM Many Concord homeowners were shocked by their tax bills. Demand for homes due to urban escapees and low interest rates caused a steep increase in assessments, which is good if you are selling a home but bad if you just want to live there. Many landlords are selling their rental homes as they think this is a real estate bubble and they’ll never see these prices again. Unfortunately, the city has been giving unfair breaks to owners of commercial property so residential property is paying a higher share of city expenses at the same time businesses are getting more of those services.

Letter: The opposite of terrifying

Ronald Reagan once said that “the nine most terrifying words in the English language are: I’m from the government, and I’m here to help.”A couple of days ago my wife and I had an encounter with government being there to help. We went to get our first.

John Gfroerer: Foot off the gas

John Gfroerer: Foot off the gas Published: 2/28/2021 6:50:07 AM Progress. There is no one simple definition for progress. Its measure can be different for everyone and everything. Maybe even every circumstance. When driving in my car, progress is easily and quickly defined. The goal is getting there. The closer we are, the faster we go – every mile left behind is progress with a clearly defined conclusion. In the evolution of a community, however, progress can have multiple incarnations, occasionally all at the same time. And here is where things start to get interesting. Because sometimes progress can be in the form of just stopping. I’m not talking about having the city council approve that stop sign for the end of your street instead of that roundabout. I’m talking about the act of actually stopping. Looking around and taking a breath, seeing what there is to see.
