Letter: Republicans don t cut taxes, they downshift

Republicans are planning on raising your taxes again. Yes, you read that correctly. Despite their claims to be “tax cutters,” Republicans are making sure that you and I, the average taxpayer, see hefty hikes in our taxes. This is because Republicans.

Letter: An important message about vouchers

Letter: An important message about vouchers Published: 2/17/2021 12:01:19 AM I’d like to thank the Rt. Rev. Robert Hirschfeld, Episcopal bishop of New Hampshire, for his thoughtful insights in the Feb. 10 “My Turn” piece on House Bill 20 (the school voucher bill currently moving through the state Legislature). Because of his position, Bishop Hirschfeld has longstanding relationships with several private schools in the state. I assumed that he would welcome the prospect of a new funding source for private schools through local taxes. Instead, he describes the widening disparity among children in different communities in terms of their access to educational opportunity. He explained that this gap is caused by the inequitable way New Hampshire funds our public schools – “where excellence is dependent on property values.” He notes that the passage of HB 20 would only make this disparity worse, as it will drain funds from our public schools.

Penacook supermarket could finally be coming true along with two roundabouts master plan for Whitney Road TFM Courtesy Published: 2/14/2021 6:07:05 PM After more than a decade of discussion it looks like all the pieces are nearly in place to bring a supermarket to Penacook along with not one, but two roundabouts. “The goal is to have the roadway substantially complete by end of 2021 so the development on the private (land) would be able to proceed,” said Deputy City Manager Carlos Baia. But he noted that this schedule is far from certain. The next step will be a March 8 public hearing before the City Council about whether to place the proposed development near Exit 17 inside a tax district known as TIF, designed to help the city make payments on $4.2 million in bonds for the roadwork, which is estimated to cost $4.78 million all told. Road construction could begin as early as April if everything proceeds smoothly.

Letter: Who is this legislation for?

In Thursday’s Monitor there were two front-page articles that caught my attention: one was about a proposal to block future gun laws by enshrining in the New Hampshire Constitution a prohibition on the Legislature from enacting any gun law.
