Coastal News Today | Int l - Irish aquaculture ambitions quashed by bureaucracy, financing quagmires

Growth in Ireland’s aquaculture sector has stagnated, and it’s a situation that’s emblematic of much that has malfunctioned in the European Union’s underachieving aquaculture sector, according to some of the country’s top aquaculture experts. Despite generous E.U. grants for capital investment and equipment, licensing issues have created a situation where Ireland’s aquaculture sector has been “standing still for the past decade,” according to Teresa Morrisey, head of advocacy for aquaculture at the Irish Farmers’ Association. Sheep prices: Farmers urged to ignore quotes

May 17, 2021 1:59 pm Sheep farmers are being urged to “ignore quotes” on lamb due to a continuing strong performance in the market. The Irish Farmer’s Association (IFA) said today (Monday, May 17) that demand for lamb is outweighing supplies and that factories are paying “well above” quoted prices in order to secure supply. “The practice of quoting prices that in no way reflect the market is angering farmers and undermining producer groups who have made commitments to factories,” IFA National Sheep Committee chairperson Sean Dennehy said. Dennehy argued that there is “an urgent need for greater transparency” through accurate and up-to-date factory price reporting.
