Advocates Raise Concerns About Rollback Of Opportunities Behind Bars Following Anamosa Attack

File In this June 18, 2015, photo, a prisoner walks near his crowded living area in Elmore Correctional Facility in Elmore, Ala. Prison officials have made a host of changes in the wake of the killings of two staffers by two inmates at the Anamosa State Penitentiary on March 23, reshuffling wardens across facilities, freezing inmate job assignments, and putting other work opportunities on hold. While some steps appear temporary, advocates are concerned that the attack could lead to a broader rollback of opportunities behind bars. Before the attack at Anamosa, Anji’s brother prided himself on working maintenance at the prison. At times, he worked unsupervised, carrying his tools to his job site and then reporting back when he was done.

One floor of the building is dedicated to one main purpose  housing its workout equipment. We are trying to build a climate within the department where officers take care of themselves both physically and mentally, Maj. of Administration Adam Schaefer told The Hawk Eye on Friday. In addition, Schaefer said being in law enforcement is a physically demanding job. All the workout equipment either has been purchased by officers or through donations to the department, and there are a few officers who have worked as physical trainers.  The equipment is divided into two areas a weight room and a cardio room. Schaefer said this provides more privacy for officers.

Homes for Iowa addresses housing shortage - Decorah Newspapers

Homes for Iowa addresses housing shortage Chad Smith Saturday, February 20, 2021 8:26 PM Housing costs can make it harder for Iowans to find a new place to call their own. Homes for Iowa intends to address this challenge. During the next ten years, the organization plans to build more than 800 affordable homes in differing parts of the state. “Iowa struggles to build moderately-priced new homes, especially in rural areas,” said Executive Director Rachelle Howe of Upper Explorerland Regional Planning Commission. “The demand is high, and the supply is low. Upper Explorerland completes housing assessments for each county every few years, so we have a good idea of what the needs are. The lack of moderately-priced homes is a problem.”

Huxley library to create StoryWalk along Heart of Iowa Trail

Huxley library to create StoryWalk along Heart of Iowa Trail Sara Jordan-Heintz Contributing writer The Huxley Public Library is nearing its fundraising goal to build and maintain a StoryWalk along the Heart of Iowa Trail through the town’s Railroad Park. A StoryWalk is a series of permanent signs that house pages of books, which can easily be swapped out. Over the course of a quarter mile or so, people can read the entire story. Director of Library Services Cathy Van Maanen said StoryWalks have been popping up in parks all across the United States. “It just seemed really obvious for the library to go outside its four walls and add this to the community,” she said. “The Heart of Iowa Trail is now fully paved through town and it is well-traveled.”
