A MEASURE of Sir Harry Lauder’s international fame could be found on one of the many wreaths on display at his funeral in Hamilton on March 2, 1950. It bore the message, ‘In grateful remembrance of a grand life’s work’, and was signed by Winston Churchill, the once and future Prime Minister, and his wife Clementine. Sir Harry had died at home on February 26, aged 79. Six cars filled with wreaths from relatives, public bodies and his friends from the world of entertainment preceded the funeral cortege to Cadzow Church from Lauder Ha’, Strathaven, where a private service had been held.

Veteran Harry Bailey – Master of the collection bucket dies aged 99

WWII veteran Harry Bailey, 99, from Lewisham, was a huge part of the Taxi Charity family. He was equally loved by the veterans the charity supports, and the London cabbies who volunteer their time to take the veterans on trips across Europe and the UK. Harry was a regular on all the trips, and he will be greatly missed by all. During the Second World War, Harry was in The Royal Army Service Corps and worked on the Mulberry Harbour as part of the D Day Landings. He was presented with the Legion d’honneur in 2016 while in Normandy with the Taxi Charity.

Sir Harold Evans, former Sunday Times and Palatinate editor, dies aged 92

, has died at the age of 92 of heart failure in New York.  Born in Salford in 1928 to a working class background, Evans studied politics at University College in Durham after completing his national service. In Durham, he edited Palatinate during epiphany term, 1951, just three years after the Paper was established in 1948. He later said this experience was “indispensable for a career in journalism.” He also wrote about his experience for Palatinate to mark the paper’s 800th edition. He recalled his time in Durham fondly, saying in 2016: “this amazing, historic peninsula awakens dormant senses. Who could not be thrilled, and changed, by the learning, the music, the debates, the architecture, the companionship, the contiguity of town and gown.”

Theory of the Novel Instructors: Armstrong and Garréta Intended for graduate students and advanced undergraduates who want to pursue some area of novel, fiction, or narrative studies, this course examines a set of concepts that should provide them access to 1) the modes of thinking that characterize novels across the modern and contemporary periods and several different national traditions, 2) the various ways that critical theory has defined those concepts, and 3) reading the novel as a concept-driven argument in relation to other disciplinary discourses, especially critical theory. The course begins by considering a long and robust tradition of critical theory focused on the novel.
