When Sir Harry Jones became a Freeman of Newport

Sir Harry swore an oath of obedience to Newport before he signed the Roll of Freeman. He said: I deeply appreciate the honour that you ve bestowed upon me. I see it as a recognition of the work of the council as a whole. As a young boy I never imagined I would be fortunate enough to achieve such high office within the city of my birth. I ve seen many changes, not least in the way the council is run. There have been many highlights in the last 30 years. A look back at Amersham s lost cinema | Bucks Free Press

Last house for the Regent In Amersham-on-the-Hill, 59 years ago this week, 100s of people could be seen queueing down Sycamore Road. Although a popular movie, the high demand for tickets was because the final show, on Saturday 10 March 1962, was to be the last ever screening at the cinema and everyone in the town wanted to be there. The fate of the cinema had been sealed the previous year when Amersham Council sanctioned the application by British Land for its change of use. The owners of the Regent, Shipman & King, held only a lease on the premises and this had now expired.

Renaming cities: Let s promote the Eastern Cape s r

Is the decision to rename the airport at East London after King Phalo appropriate? Why was Chief Phato of the amaGqunukhwebe nation, who had his Great Place near the site of the modern airport, not chosen instead? And, what does the proposed name for the city itself, Ku Gompo, actually mean or represent, and how does it relate to the city and its people? The absence of reference to the amaGqunukhwebe nation under the leadership of Chief Phato, who occupied the coastal plains between the Keiskamma and Kei rivers for the entire 19th century, is rather surprising. In its place, the emphasis has been placed on King Phalo, the 18th-century founding father of the pure Xhosa nation, which subsequently split due to the conflicts between warring sons.
