LAUREL, Del. – Senator Tom Carper visited a local boys and girls club to help pass out meals and discuss the summer food program on Friday afternoon.
We’re told the USDA summer food program has gone on for years; a federally funded program to provide free meals for students during the summer months that regularly get free and reduced meals during the school year.
However, according to state officials this summer there is a bigger need to help cater to students because of the pandemic. Through state funding, the program was able to increase meal services from 350 meals to 500 meals a month. Something officials say, is helpful during these times. “There’s some silver lining in all of this past year, use our lessons to reach the kids in a better and get more meals out,” says Aimee Beam, Education Associate for Nutrition programs at Delaware Department of Education.
