ITD releases cause of massive rockslide on Highway 55

Geotechnical experts have now been hired to help ITD prevent future slides in the area. Author: KTVB Staff Updated: 4:19 PM MDT April 9, 2021 BOISE, Idaho The Idaho Transportation Department has released more information about a massive rockslide that occurred in a construction zone on Idaho Highway 55 near Smiths Ferry last month. After assessing the area, ITD has determined it was a localized event, and after additional mitigation, the greater hillside remains stable. The slide occurred on March 15 within a work zone where crews are cutting into the hillside along the highway to create extra room traffic and enhance the overall safety of the road. Crews are working to reduce the severity of curves, construct wider shoulders, and add guardrail and pullouts along the highway.

Legislation would double electric vehicle registration fees

Legislation would double electric vehicle registration fees By KEITH RIDLERApril 7, 2021 GMT BOISE, Idaho (AP) An Idaho House committee on Tuesday introduced legislation that would more than double what it costs to register electric vehicles. The House Ways and Means Committee voted 4-3 along party lines with no Democratic support to clear the way for a potential public hearing for the bill. The bill would raise the vehicle registration fee from $140 to $300. Vehicle owners could instead opt to pay 2.5 cents per mile. Owners choosing the per-mile option would have to report their mileage annually to the Idaho Transportation Department. Backers said the fee is needed so electric vehicle users pay their fair share for road upkeep that partially comes from gas taxes. Opponents say $300 overshoots the mark so far that it will discourage electric vehicle use.
