Gonzalez, 26, died after he suffered a “medical emergency” during a struggle with officers, Alameda Police’s Capt. Jeff Emmitt said in a statement. The cause of the medical emergency remained unknown, pending an autopsy by the Alameda County coroner’s office. Officers detained Gonzalez on the 800 block of Oak Street around 10:45 a.m. Monday after responding to reports of an intoxicated person suspected of theft, Emmitt said. “There was a scuffle as officers attempted to place his hands behind his back,” Emmitt said, adding that officers “did not use any weapons.”
