Man who died after struggle with Alameda police identified as Oakland resident

Alameda police on Wednesday identified the man who died in their custody Monday as Oakland resident Mario Arenales Gonzalez.
Gonzalez, 26, died after he suffered a “medical emergency” during a struggle with officers, Alameda Police’s Capt. Jeff Emmitt said in a statement.
The cause of the medical emergency remained unknown, pending an autopsy by the Alameda County coroner’s office.
Officers detained Gonzalez on the 800 block of Oak Street around 10:45 a.m. Monday after responding to reports of an intoxicated person suspected of theft, Emmitt said.
“There was a scuffle as officers attempted to place his hands behind his back,” Emmitt said, adding that officers “did not use any weapons.”
