Luzerne County will offer three mail ballot drop boxes in addition to one inside the county’s downtown Wilkes-Barre Penn Place building used heavily during last year’s presidential election.
The county Election Board voted Wednesday to approve the election bureau’s request to add boxes inside the Hazleton, Nanticoke and Pittston city hall buildings.
This means the county will have drop boxes in all four cities for the convenience of May 18 primary election mail ballot voters, officials said.
Also, the county election bureau is seeking poll workers for several voting districts in the primary.
At a remote meeting Tuesday, the county board of elections approved placing ballot drop boxes inside the city halls of Hazleton, Nanticoke and Pittston for the primary
There will also be a drop box in the lobby of the Penn Place building in Wilkes-Barre, as there was for last Novemberâs general election.
The additional drop boxes will allow voters throughout the county to drop off ballots without the need to drive to Wilkes-Barre, deputy election director Eryn Harvey said.
The drop boxes will be inside the municipal building of each city and will be bolted in place, Harvey said. Sheriffâs deputies will retrieve ballots placed in the boxes and transport them to the election bureau in the Penn Place building, she said.
The Luzerne County Board of Elections will choose a new chairperson this week â which might end the recent turnover among county election officials.
The selection will follow public interviews of three citizens who applied for the chairperson position, at a special meeting of the board at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
County council appoints four of the five members of the election board, which certifies the results of county elections. Council appoints two members from each of the major political parties, as stipulated by the county charter.
Those four members then appoint a fifth member, of any political affiliation, to serve as chairperson.
