Comedy Legend Paul Mooney Dead At 79

Paul Mooney has died. He was 79. According to TMZ, the comedian, writer and actor s family confirmed that he died from a heart attack on on Wednesday morning (May 19th) at his home in Oakland. Paramedics tried to revive him but they were unsuccessful. Journalist and TV host Roland S. Martin initially broke the news about Paul s death, saying that he received a call from Paul s cousin Rudy Ealy. Martin said, “His cousin, Rudy Ealy, just called me from Paul’s phone and said he passed away two hours ago after suffering a heart attack at his home in Oakland. He was 79.”

Tribute Show Planned for Paul Mooney at Laugh Factory in Hollywood

via Twitter Jamie Masada, the owner and founder of the iconic Laugh Factory comedy club in Hollywood, tells TMZ that several A-listers are set to honor Paul Mooney with a special show on Thursday at 3 PM.  Here’s more from the outlet: Eddie Murphy and Kevin Hart are among the many who have been contacted to attend. We’re told Tiffany Haddish is not able to attend because of work but will send in a special video tribute to be played during the event. Paul’s twin sons comedians Dwayne and Daryl will also be there … with the list of special guests expected only to grow.

As we previously reported, Mooney was the writer behind some of Pryor’s greatest comedy hits like “Richard Pryor: Live on the Sunset Strip” and “The Richard Pryor Show.” His friendship and collaboration with Pryor began in 1968 and lasted until Pryor’s death in 2005. Together, they confronted racism perhaps more directly than it ever had been before onstage. Mooney chronicled their partnership in his 2007 memoir “Black Is the New White.” He also wrote for the 1970’s sitcom “Sanford and Son” which starred Redd Fox and has writing credit for the Fox comedy sketch show “In Living Color,” becoming the mind behind the famous character of Homey D. Clown, played by Damon Wayans.
