FEWER cars were spotted on ACT roads amid the COVID-19 pandemic last year, but the ACT government still reaped in millions of dollars in revenue off motorists from speed and red-light cameras.
The territory’s top-five earning traffic cameras caught more than 15,000 drivers altogether in the last financial year, according to a nationally privately-owned automotive publisher.
Based on the lowest possible traffic infringement – $297 for exceeding speed limit by up to 15km/h – five cameras alone account for more than $5.5 million in fines.
Four of the cameras were based on either the Monaro or Barton highways, including the three largest money-earners for the Barr government.

More than £7,000-worth of bikes and 14 BB guns was stolen from a property in Maryport.
Police are investigating the reported burglary, which occurred in Ellenborough on December 19 between 5pm and midnight.
Entry has been forced to a barn at a residential property.Â
Items taken include a Yamaha Trial Bike valued at £1,200; a Hardbike Hardtail 7.0 Bosch E-Bike valued at £3,000 and a Saracen Kili Flyer Bike valued at £3,000.
Also taken were 14 BB guns which are replica in style to G36s, M4s and Sniper models.
Police are appealing for information in locating these items, and also locating the people responsible.
Plans to provide six defibrillators in Maryport have hit a snag. The town council ‘s finance committee agreed on Monday that further investigation was needed first because of cost, the need to be available at all times and reports of vandalism elsewhere.
