MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) The Kentucky Derby is Saturday, and it airs” on 41NBC. Several local businesses are preparing for parties to help celebrate “The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports”.
Charlie Shimp is co-owner of Hazard’s on the Green in Perry. They’ll have special menu items for the Derby in addition to regular menu items. They’re encouraging everyone to dress up in Derby attire. Shimp says you can expect a great atmosphere.
“We are going to have the derby on, we’ll have drinks, we’ll have signature drinks for the derby and live music starting at seven. So come out, come dressed, and get ready for a good time,” says Shimp.

MACON, Ga. Around this time of year, Georgia s National Fairgrounds are usually packed with thousands of people for Perry s annual Dogwood Festival.
This year, that wasn t the case because the festival was cancelled for the second year in a row. This year would be our 32nd Annual Dogwood Festival, so it s a long-time festival. It s mainly an arts and crafts festival and we usually have around 150 vendors, said Ellen Palmer.
Ellen Palmer is the president and CEO of Perry s Chamber, and she says the anticipation was at an all-time high due to last year s cancellation.
Peyton Lewis is a 20-year-old reporter from Stockbridge, Georgia. She graduated in December of 2019 with her Bachelor s Degree in Journalism from the University of Georgia. She found a love for reporting after receiving a video camera for her 8th birthday. She and her friends would make mock newscasts in her backyard other creative content.
Peyton s love for writing and creating videos pushed her to pursue journalism. In order to kick-start her dream of being a reporter, she left the traditional high school experience at the age of 16 to attend Gordon State College as a full-time student. She graduated with her Associate s degree two weeks before graduating from high school.

PERRY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) It’s International Women’s Day and women-owned small businesses are the fastest growing in the state, according to Georgia.Org.
Ellen Palmer serves as president and CEO of the Perry Chamber. She says Perry has many businesses owned by women, as well as, many women that hold leadership roles in the city. She says it’s an honor to be apart of that group.
“It’s just really impressive when you start looking at all the businesses, how many are run by women, and such successful businesses,” says Palmer. “Ones that have been here a long time, one’s that give back to our community and do so many good things.”
