Tributes paid to much-loved former Bolton Mayoress

TRIBUTE: Rita Fairhurst with partner Peter Finch TRIBUTES have been paid to a former Mayoress of Bolton following her death on Tuesday. Former councillor Rita Fairhurst died aged 88 following a short illness, with ex-colleagues and friends remembering the work she did for the town. Rita represented Westhoughton South from 1990 to 1994, before becoming Mayoress to her partner, Hon. Alderman Peter Finch, in 1998/99. She was a governor at Eatock Primary in Westhoughton and it was at her suggestion the school was named Eatock. Mayor Cllr Linda Thomas, who had known Rita, said she “worked hard all her life” to support those in the community.

WAGE: Critical workers CALLS are growing to boost the pay of care workers. Bolton-branch of Unison and the local Labour Group say it is a scandal that those supporting the most vulnerable through the pandemic are amongst the lowest paid. Martin Challender, Bolton Unison Communications Officer said:”Throughout the pandemic everyone has seen the vital role of care workers supporting people who are elderly and disabled whether in care homes or in community settings. “These are critical frontline workers who have stepped up to the plate in terms of providing support to some of the most vulnerable people in our town.
