Gassner piles pressure on World Cup leader Dukurs with Königssee win Friday, 22 January 2021
In-form Alexander Gassner cranked up the heat on overall men s skeleton leader Martins Dukurs with victory at the International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation (IBSF) World Cup in Königssee in Germany.
The German registered a winning time of 1min 39.88sec after runs of 49.91 and 49.97 on his home track, while Latvia’s Dukurs produced his worst performance of the season.
Dukurs finished more than a second behind Gassner in 11th place as he watched his rival win for the second successive race.
With just one stage remaining, defending champion Dukurs holds a 60-point lead over Gassner at the top of the overall standings.

Germany s Francesco Friedrich continued to make history on the final day of the International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation (IBSF) World Cup after his team broke the four-man bobsleigh track record in St Moritz in Switzerland.
Friedrich yesterday set a new record for World Cup wins after victory in the two-man event and after winning today, now has 48 wins to his name.
He surpassed the previous record holder, the retired women s driver Sandra Kiriasis, also of Germany.
His new track record was set in the second run, with the new best being a time of 1min 04.75sec.
Friedrich and his team of Martin Grothkopp, Alexander Schüller and Thorsten Margis, held off a strong Austrian side piloted by Benjamin Maier, to win another gold medal.

Germany’s Alexander Gassner celebrated his maiden victory at the International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation (IBSF) World Cup leg in St Moritz.
Gassner triumphed in the men’s skeleton event on a successful day for Germany in Switzerland, with world champion Tina Hermann winning the women’s competition.
The German duo took advantage of the absence of European skeleton champions Elena Nikitina and Alexander Tretyakov, with the Russians having opted to skip the event to prepare for the World Championships.
Latvian star Martins Dukurs led the men’s event after the opening run by clocking 1min 8.22sec, with Gassner 0.2 off the pace in second.
