Whitehorse Daily Star: COVID primarily affecting unvaccinated people

Government officials report that 117 active cases of the virus are now known. Dr. Brendan Hanley, the Yukon’s chief medical officer of health, issued multiple updates over the weekend. The most recent, issued Monday afternoon, stated 30 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 had been identified since Saturday afternoon. “There are now 100 active cases in the territory,” the release stated. Seventeen more cases were added this morning in an update from Pat Living, a spokesperson for Hanley. “Since June 4, 2021, screening results received so far indicate all cases are positive for the Gamma (P.1) variant,” a statement said. “That leaves Yukon’s total case count as 212. Fourteen cases have recovered. Twenty-three cases are in Whitehorse and seven in rural communities.

Photo submitted by Patrick Whyard Students were challenged to bring in non-perishable food donations in exchange for cutting a school councillor s hair. Elijah Smith Elementary School is set to donate a large amount of food to the Whitehorse Food Bank as a result of a school-wide contest. Councillor Patrick Whyard says he s had long hair for quite some time, so a challenge was issued to the students. For every hundred cans brought in, the school would cut off an inch. I think the students went above and beyond in collecting food and in turn, we went above and beyond in inches that are due to come off.
