Cocoa Beach teacher dies of COVID-19, second in district

Brevard Public Schools has lost another teacher to COVID-19. Wayne Moore, a Cocoa Beach Junior/Senior High School digital design and marketing teacher, died May 25 after a six-week fight with COVID-19, according to his obituary. He was 65 years old. A Florida native, Moore graduated from Seabreeze High School in Daytona Beach in 1973. He was married to his wife, Ronni Massa Moore, for 44 years. Before teaching at Brevard Public Schools, he ran a Salty Dog franchise. He coached high school girls’ softball and volleyball, and had recently started his own photography business. “We all grieve when someone from the BPS family dies,” Brevard Public Schools spokesman Russell Bruhn said in a statement. “Mr. Moore was a beloved teacher and mentor to students, and will be greatly missed. We wish nothing but comfort and peace for his family.”

Brevard schools COVID-19 cases top 2,000 as pandemic

Correction: A previous version of this post incorrectly listed which schools had the highest COVID-19 cases. The list has been updated with the correct data. In roughly a year since COVID-19 reached Brevard County, Brevard Public Schools has reported over 2,000 COVID-19 cases. The school district has seen 2,385 COVID-19 cases since Aug. 31, and saw an increase of 439 COVID-19 cases in February. Its most recent report, from Feb. 26 to March 2, included 37 cases, eight of them employees and 29 students. During that time period, 393 employees and students quarantined due to exposure from the virus. Over two-thirds (298) quarantined due to contact with cases within the school district, and 95 people quarantined due to contact with a case in the community or their household.
