Slow progress in Ross jury selection | News, Sports, Jobs

Ross HOLLIDAYSBURG The review of potential jurors to hear first-degree murder and related charges against a Hollidaysburg area man progressed slowly Wednesday and into the evening hours at the Blair County Courthouse. “As you’ve figured out, we’re not just picking 12 jurors out of a hat,” defense attorney Thomas M. Dickey told a prospective juror who had already answered questions for about a half hour. The juror-by-juror review, scheduled to continue today and Friday, is expected to produce a jury panel in the capital case against Paul Aaron Ross, accused of murdering 26-year-old Tina S. Miller of Hollidaysburg in 2004.

Ross trial jury selection to start | News, Sports, Jobs

Jurors returning Wednesday and Thursday will be subject to additional questioning aimed at seating an impartial panel of 12 jurors and at least four alternates. In preparation for this week’s proceedings and Ross’ trial starting April 12, President Judge Elizabeth Doyle issued an order with rules addressing courtroom seating and behavior.

No contest plea in stalking case | News, Sports, Jobs

kstephens@altoonamirror.com HOLLIDAYSBURG An Altoona man charged last year with stalking the family of his former landlord has agreed to avoid future contact with that family as part of a no contest plea to the offense. Erick J. Karlson, 46, rendered the plea Wednesday in Blair County Court in exchange for a time-served county prison sentence of four to eight months. Because Karlson has time remaining on a state prison sentence handed down in Centre County, he will be returned to the State Correctional Institution at Benner, then subject to state supervision upon release, attorneys advised President Judge Elizabeth Doyle, who reviewed the proposed plea agreement.

On Wednesday in Blair County Court, the now 21-year-old Williams pledged to finish a sentence of three to seven years incarceration, then never be in trouble again. “I didn’t understand how important life was until I was in jail,” Williams told President Judge Elizabeth Doyle. While inside Blair County Prison for almost two years, Williams said he missed the birth of his brother’s and sister’s children. He also said he has done a lot of thinking and knows he caused stress for his mother.
