Now pastor with deep ties wants second chance to save it Updated Feb 08, 2021; Facebook Share FLINT, MI Nearly 100 years after Jefferson Elementary School was built on North Street, the city of Flint must decide whether the property can be reborn and whether a pastor who has seen it operate in the best and worst of times can be part of any turnaround. The Rev. Derrick Aldridge, pastor of 2nd Chance Church, wants the city to honor a commitment by the Flint City Council to sell the building at 5306 North St., to him for $1,000 a move that comes more than 40 years after the church led by his father, the late Rev. Avery Aldridge, first purchased the building from the Flint Community Schools and established the Foss Avenue Christian School there.

It was a moment many in Flint, Michigan, feared would never come. More than six years after residents learned they had been exposed to lead-contaminated drinking water and a deadly disease outbreak, top leadership in the state and city at the time have been indicted on criminal charges in connection with their role in the crisis. The sweeping criminal cases announced Thursday include Rick Snyder, the former Republican governor; Snyder’s top aide and his chief of staff; as well as both the state’s top doctor and health official during the crisis, who face the most severe charges: nine counts of involuntary manslaughter each, as well as official misconduct and neglect of duty for “grossly negligent performance.”

Originally from Rogers City, Mays was one of two people to survive the sinking of the Bradley, a self-unloading bulk freighter that split in two and sank during a storm on Nov. 18, 1958 about 12 miles south of Gull Island on Lake Michigan. The 89-year-old died at Advent Health Hospital in Zephyrhills, Florida, according to his obituary. Mays moved to Florida in 1982 and lived in Dade City. “Coming so close to death at such an early age, he was basically going to live life, and, if there was something he wanted to do, he did it,” his daughter, Laine Mays, said.
