Thinking It Through: Women March On, Men Wait

Bell picked off a pass at the UMD blue line, muscled her way by a defender, and sniped the winning shot that sent her team to its first Frozen Four in 11 years, along with giving head coach Maura Crowell her 100th win at UMD. The Bulldogs match up with Northeastern next, a semifinal game Thursday at either 1pm or 6pm on KDAL. Matt Wellens is there, so give his gamer a read, and make sure to check back for more content from him in the coming days from Erie (assuming he hasn’t found a brewery he really likes ). I watched it on my tablet after calling the UMD men’s game off my television. I thought UMD’s defensive effort was tremendous. The Bulldogs had good sticks, good positioning, and did a fantastic job protecting Emma Soderberg, who paid them back for their work by stopping all 30 shots that got to her. As the game wore on, UMD got better about possessing the puck and generating chances, but it was tough sledding. The teams combined for 42 blocked shots in the game (Colgat

Colgate's historic season ends with heartbreaking OT loss to Minnesota Duluth in national quarterfinals

Colgate s historic season ends with heartbreaking OT loss to Minnesota Duluth in national quarterfinals Credit: NCAA Posted: Mar 16, 2021 12:24 AM Updated: Mar 16, 2021 12:24 AM Posted By: Spencer Davidson ERIE, PA - The historic 2020-21 season for the Colgate women s ice hockey program came to an abrupt end with a 1-0 overtime loss to the University of Minnesota-Duluth in the NCAA Tournament Quarterfinals, Monday. After going scoreless through 60 minutes of play, Ashton Bell scored the game s only goal 6:39 into the extra frame in order to advance the Bulldogs into the semifinal round. It was a great hockey game tonight between two really good teams, hence we needed overtime to solve it, said Greg Fargo, Colgate head coach. I thought for the most part we played a really good game and played the game we wanted to play. We would have loved to found a way to generate a few more chances at times, but Duluth did a great job defensively.

Thinking It Through: Grizzled Bulldogs Advance to Semifinal

Duluth, MN, USA / 95 KQDS Mar 15, 2021 11:42 AM It had been 701 days since UMD’s last postseason game, but it looked like it had been a week or two. Unfazed by Western Michigan goals in the final minute of the second and third periods, UMD did what UMD does: It won a postseason game. Freshman defenseman Connor Kelley’s second goal in as many games was his first career game-winner, and the Bulldogs advanced to the NCHC Frozen Faceoff semifinals Saturday night with a dramatic 5-4 win over Western Michigan in Grand Forks. “I think their wing came out to me a bit, so I decided to shoot it,” Kelley said very matter-of-factly about his winning tally. It wasn’t a play without controversy, as it appeared there was a problem with the drop of the puck on the faceoff. The puck looked like it hit the glove of UMD’s Jesse Jacques, then bounced off either the hand or stick of Western Michigan’s Paul Washe before finding its way to WMU defenseman Aidan Fulp.
